The indoor sundial reflects a circle of sunshine onto your wall.As the sun moves through the sky the spot of light moves across the wall, inverting the principle of the normal dial that creates shadow. The sundial pack comes with wall markers for each hour of sunshine. It dismantles the perception that sundials only exist as status symbols in homes with gardens, creating an egalitarian and positive product that can be used by anyone whether they own a house or flat, with or without a garden. While checking the time on a traditional sundial is rendered superfluous by wristwatches, the indoor sundial effectively becomes a wall clock – a simple glance rather than a stride through the garden. The Simple Sunshine Clock is available to buy, contact us here.
On a recent trip to Japan, our client at Adidas was hugely impressed by the varied styles of concrete buildings and was looking to promote a similar aesthetic for the redesign of the no. 6 store in Soho, London. This icon store sells products which are unique and unobtainable elsewhere (and is now their only icon store worldwide not to designed by the Adidas studio).

One of a=r’s favourite design movements is Metabolism, and as “Japan” and “concrete” were at the heart of the brief, we were delighted to be able to employ its aesthetics and methods for this store redesign.

Metabolist structures were devised to offer adaptability to the occupants, relying on then modern technology/materials, specifically concrete. Their buildings often resembled skeletal shelving systems where floors and rooms could be hung. The framework was always larger than required in the event that the building needed to house more rooms for additional dwellers and equipment.

For the No. 6 design, we combined the use of concrete with the adaptability of the Metabolist movement and sense of a sports stadium, through the sweeping shapes of a rear light racking system that allows multiple display variation for shoes, apparel and mounted imagery. Perspex holders present the shoes with a line of light underneath, emphasising the exclusivity of the products.

An ‘add on’ timber cladding mirroring the store’s ‘concrete’ walls allows for instant shop change, with a firm wall upon which to securely mount a temporary store appearance. These ‘skins’ are stored in the basement room lining the walls, where they are used with their inside facing out so they may house shoes and apparel in the same way as their ‘concrete’ cousins do above.

Unable to employ heavy concrete in the store, we used recycled newsprint which looks like concrete but is more adaptable, more environmentally friendly, and could be cut and spliced in a way that metabolism could not achieve with its materials.

Adidas were pleased with the design and wanted to highlight the craftsmanship involved, which resonated well with their year of promoting craftsmanship in their design. Accordingly, we produced a book showing the design process and manufacture, in PDF form here.

These clothes rails designed for Religion deliberately increased traffic, with a resultant 30% rise in sales. The double peak of the opposing angled lengths made a brand-specific church reference and meant that the rails were prominent when placed as concessions in showrooms across the country. a=r designed a double rail so more product could be displayed that, crucially, had curved ends so customers were unconsciously coerced into viewing the entire range rather than glancing off after looking at only one side of the rail. A central bar meant one item could be exhibited from the front and back. The Religion logo was made from sandcast aluminium and placed on beech ply in the middle of the rails.

This was an exhibition and shop to celebrate Adidas’ 70 year history of tennis footwear design. It was opened by Ilie Nastase at the start of the Wimbledon period, with over 35 shoes gently rotated above real grass. Some shoes were for exhibition only, while some were for sale. The grass was slowly eroded by the many customers, mirroring the degradation of the turf at centre court. Other points of mimicry included a timber frame under the grass which allowed it to come up to the level of the net on centre court; grass white-marked to scale; the sounds of tennis strokes, volleys and smashes; and a cyclops machine that beeped if customers touched the shoes. This all suggested an affinity between the Adidas brand and the famous sporting event. The notion of the space being both an exhibition and shop was created by blurring the distinction of shopper/visitor. All shoes were illuminated with dichroic bulbs, but the ones for sale had yellow coated bulbs – subtly attenuating the consumerist nature of the “shop” and encouraging customers to take in the entirety of the exhibition.

The shoes were revolved from stainless steel rods at such an angle that visitors could see all angles by simply waiting and watching, rather than touching (many of the exhibited shoes were the only of their kind). With the soles just above the grass, an image of lifelike suspension was created and a connection was made between surface and purpose. The Carnaby Street site was not finally chosen by Adidas UK until 1 week before construction began, so the scheme was therefore devised to adapt to any potential room arrangement. For example, the cash desk also containing store stock (in the event of no or limited store room) was designed to expand, contract and contort from a slim 250mm to over 2 metres in length.

The exhibition/store was intended to have the appearance of a pop-up shop, so all the evidence of it having been there was immediately removed after its two week lifespan, preserving (untarnished) memories that people held about it.

The Village Fête is the V&A and Scarlet Projects’ contemporary take on the traditional English fête. a=r frequently participates in this mini-design festival with others from the creative industries.

Year One: Castaways. We noticed that no one had devised a principle where fête-goers could make a bespoke object quickly and walk away with it. To remedy to this, we devised wax sandcasting. The punter could chose their own composition using a random selection of everyday objects, which were pushed into wet sand to produce moulds. To play the part we dressed like famous castaways Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn and had our own beach shack.

Year Two: Flyaways. Punters were issued a piece of A4 paper for 50p by a ticket officer, from which they could make as many paper planes as they liked. The aeroplanes were launched by a 3M-high catapult into the air, to surpass different heights denoted by silver balloons and a runway strip light running up the side of the museum.

Year Three: Balloon popping race – as if back in school, punters raced to sharpen their pencil and pop their balloon faster than anyone else. High achievers and blunt ends alike were awarded report cards before bunking off for the rest of the day.

Year Four: Beer(d) Tent. The challenge was to make a beard from thick wadding, secure and stuff it with as many things as possible, drink beer, and stick it on your face all by the time the bluegrass tune ended.

Large is a creative agency specialising in online branding. They requested a=r to design a portfolio which would display their work to remind both themselves of their successful projects and to demonstrate to potential clients their creativity. This physical structure coordinates and makes sense of what can be a chaotic nature of work. The structure is softly suggestive of the manners in which companies display their physical product (e.g. the conveyor belt bar which Yo!Sushi use), and combines this together with the non-tangible online structures which Large produce for these companies. Making a reference to street furniture, the structure shows the websites’ mapping and sequence of clicks. The portfolio’s appearance can be easily changed by slotting new images into place.

The Zoetrope lightshade has a=r’s favourite features: lightweight, easy to produce, easy for the customer to install, light in volume and no impact to the planet. The solar-powered lightshade makes the most of the traditional GLS bulb’s inefficiency by powering a motor which produces a moving cartoon or story on the ceiling. The lightshade is made for adult and children, who can easily draw on it.By using a solar panel which is attached to the shade, there is no need to dig into the ceiling to attach the product – it works with any light-fitting. Further models are in development because energy-saving lights do not power the solar panel.

The zoetrope lightshade is a beguiling development on previous incarnations of the zoetrope, being an almost animal-like object that feeds only on light. The lightshade has a personality beyond its expected use, not just working when a lightbulb is on, but also when the sun shines.

Our very first project: a press launch and party to promote the 6876 Autumn/Winter collection and showcase the films specially produced by Norbert Schoerner for this event. The event reflected the participative ethos of 6876 by using slides, creating two cinema rooms, handing round text and running a soup kitchen and bar.

The design mirrored this situationist approach by a specially devised rope system. By day the jacket collection was strung up at eye level for close inspection by the press.

By night the jackets were strung up high above heads to emulate a gallery atmosphere; as the party progressed the ropes were released, creating a dramatic effect as all the jackets suddenly fell to just above head height and continued bobbing up and down through the night. This connected the jackets with the occasion of a party in a non-static way.

We changed the space by cutting up and creating liminal areas by the simple use of rope – transforming the high-ceilinged Hoxton school building into an interactive party and multi-roomed gallery space.

Clothes agents regularly change their showrooms, so a=r decided to create a space which would be intriguing to visit in itself. The showroom in this case was a basement, windowless space, in the bottom of a gallery and store. Each company represented needed a demarcated area in what was already a small space, but we also wanted to show that the collections had been curated holistically and create a complete experience for the visitor. Working on a limited budget, we used cheap but robust components, creating a brash harmony with the mix of industrialised and natural materials. Partitions were created by securing card to the ceiling, which reached down to average waist-height. Images were projected in areas relevant to individual collections. Using some agile material manipulation, curves were created by lacerating the sheets of cardboard. These curves meant we could create a directed flow, so customers would be guided around the entirety of the room. When standing customers were aware of separate areas; when they progressed into the final room they were invited to sit down, and at this eye height they could see the entirety of the collections. Customers could then order their clothes as a palette, constructing their own collectionsThis project was a more enforced version of the liminal spaces a=r created for the 6876 Press Launch and Party, and is retrospectively one of our favourite projects.
